Adult ADHD Assessments
Feeling scattered, overwhelmed, or like your brain just works differently?
If you've always felt a step behind, struggled to stay organised, or wondered why you burn out so easily trying to do what seems "easy" for others, you're not alone - and you're not broken. Many adults, especially women and high performers, go undiagnosed with ADHD until later in life. Getting clarity can be life-changing.
At State of Being, we offer comprehensive ADHD assessments for adults that help you understand your brain, validate your experience, and give you the language and tools to move forward with confidence. Assessments are conducted by Amy a registered psychologist who also has lived experience of ADHD. Amy makes sure that the assessment process feels shame and stigma free, a space where you can openly explore your difficulties and receive a warm, open and professional opinion on what might be going on for you and what steps you might like to take from there.
Why See a Psychologist for an ADHD Assessment?
A psychologist is trained to assess how ADHD symptoms show up in your day-to-day functioning, often in nuanced ways that aren't captured by quick checklists. We use a combination of:
Clinical interviews
Validated psychometric tools
A strengths-based, trauma-informed lens
Thorough exploration of your history across school, work, relationships, and daily life
Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, but we can diagnose ADHD. We can provide you with the formal assessment and documentation needed to guide your next steps - whether that includes therapy, coaching, medication, or all of the above. Once you have clarity on this, should you wish to trial medication you can provide your report and diagnosis to a psychiatrist and discuss if medication options may be appropriate for you.
How does this differ from a psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists primarily work with the medication side of things
Psychologists may provide a deeper understanding of how ADHD affects your functioning, often identifying co-occurring challenges like anxiety, trauma, or perfectionism that may be tangled up with your symptoms and giving you an understanding of the strengths you possess in addition to the difficulties. Understanding your strengths and difficulties helps you make sense of your past, show up more confidently in the present, and make informed choices about what works best for your brain. It’s not about labelling - it’s about gaining insight so you can move forward with clarity, self-compassion, and the right support.

FAQs
-
These ADHD assessments are designed for adults aged 18 and over who suspect they may have ADHD or want clarity around long-standing challenges like attention, organisation, emotional regulation, or burnout. Many of our clients are high-achieving, sensitive women who’ve spent years masking symptoms or assuming their struggles were due to anxiety, trauma, or personal flaws.
-
Yes - as a registered psychologist, I can assess and diagnose ADHD based on clinical interviews, psychometric tools, and diagnostic criteria. You'll receive a formal report or letter outlining the findings, which can be used to support referrals to GPs, psychiatrists, or for study/workplace accommodations.
-
While psychologists can’t prescribe medication, your report or letter can be shared with your GP or psychiatrist as supporting evidence for medication review. Many clients use this assessment as a first step before seeing a psychiatrist, and having a thorough psychological assessment can make that process smoother.

To join our online sessions, you'll need a private space where you feel comfortable (being on the couch in your trackies with a cup of tea is more than okay!), a reliable internet connection-ideally through home Wi-Fi with high-speed service like NBN. You’ll also need a device that supports video calls, such as a smartphone, laptop, or tablet. Once we confirm your booking and your preferred time, you will receive a link via email to join the session.
We’ve chosen a secure teleconferencing system through Coviu to make sure you can easily access our services from anywhere in Australia. While any online system comes with some risks, we’ll talk about them and how we keep things secure during the first session.

We know life can get hectic, but your commitment to bookings is really important.
If you need to reschedule, that’s absolutely fine, and you’ll get reminders for your appointments to help keep you on track.
Just a heads-up: if you need to cancel within 48 hours of your appointment, there will be a full fee charged. This is because we are very limited in session availability and when there is not enough notice given we are unable to offer the session to someone who is waiting for an appointment. This will be discussed further in your first appointment and you can ask any further questions before getting started. We appreciate your understanding!

The full report is comprehensive and suitable for psychiatrists, GPs, NDIS applications, or workplace/university accommodations. It includes a full history, assessment results, diagnostic conclusions, and recommendations.
The summary letter is a shorter, lower-cost option. If applicable it confirms ADHD traits or diagnosis and includes a brief summary of your history and assessment outcomes - ideal for those wanting clarity without needing formal documentation.
