Our mission is to help you to slow down and re-connect with yourself, to find clarity on what you actually want from your life, find the things that make you happy, help you build better relationships and to give you the tools and support to reach your big goals.

Hey there!

I'm Amy Brown, a Registered Psychologist and founder of State of Being. I’m absolutely thrilled that you’re considering that we might be a good fit to support you through your struggles and challenges, to help you move towards the life you dream of. Let's face it, navigating life and figuring out who you are, what you want, and how to achieve it can be tough, right?

Since I set foot on the path to becoming a psychologist, my goal has been simple: to find and share the best tools and tips to help people live lives they love. And you know what? I want to make sure it's all super easy to understand and actually enjoyable!

As a "high-achieving" woman who was only diagnosed with ADHD within my adult years, I know firsthand what it's like to feel lost, overwhelmed, and uncertain. Whilst traditional psychology can encourage psychologists to act as blank slates, I prefer to show my humanness and vulnerability (and my fun + silly side when the time is right), because I really believe this is part of creating a strong therapeutic relationship and normalising what you’re going through, because lets face it we’re all working on something, and that makes us human!

In my professional work, I have supported couples and individuals of all ages, helping them find clarity and move closer towards a life they love. I have also studied positive psychology in the Netherlands, discovering how the traditional psychology of what goes ‘wrong’ can also teach us a lot about the conditions where things go RIGHT with humans. I've channeled my passion for psychology into various settings, from leading wellbeing retreats and workshops to non-traditional mental health supports like nature based therapy, training and supporting other clinicians, as well as contributing to mental health and wellbeing non-profit organisations. Whether I'm facilitating sessions, conducting research, or developing resources, my goal remains the same: to share evidence-based knowledge, skills and compassion, to truly make a difference.

When I'm not doing the above, you can catch me slowing down on a picnic rug at the park, taking a beach walk and swim with my gorgeous puppy Darby, eating my body weight in Mexican food, spending time with the people I love or unleashing my inner nerd with the latest (often non-fiction) book or training I’m loving. Life's too short to not do the things you enjoy!

If this resonates with you in any way and you're ready to work on self-discovery and growth, why not book an intro call so we can say hi and chat through any questions you might have.

Wishing you all the good things.

Amy

FAQs

  • Fees:

Please note the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc (AAPI) recommend that Psychologists charge $315 per 40 - 60 minute session in 2024. We are committed to ensuring accessibility of services so have set the rate of sessions at $250 for a 50 minute session.

If you hold a valid mental health treatment plan from your GP, you may be eligible to receive 10 rebated sessions per calendar year. The current rebate for 2024 is $96.65.

If you're a new client you will first need to book an initial appointment that is 80 minutes. This means there is enough time to discuss the background to who you are and properly discuss your goals for treatment to make sure therapy is set up for success.

The initial appointment of 80 minutes costs $340 ($243.35 after Medicare rebate)

Ongoing sessions of 50 minutes are $250 ($153.35 after Medicare rebate)

  • Please let me Amy know in your first appointment if you are wanting to use a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). We will need to receive a copy of this on or before your first appointment if you would like to receive a rebate for the first appointment, as unfortunately they cannot be backdated.

The MHCP means you may be eligible for $96.65 rebate per appointment for up to ten sessions.

If you would like to use a MHCP, please visit your GP before your first appointment. They will complete a plan and a referral letter which you can then send through to us.

  • Yes, if you have private health insurance coverage for psychology you will be provided with a receipt which you can claim with your health insurer.

Please note that under medicare you can only use either medicare rebates OR private health insurance, you are not able to use both at the same time.

  • To join our online sessions, you'll need a private space where you feel comfortable (being on the couch in your trackies with a cup of tea is more than okay!), a reliable internet connection—ideally through home Wi-Fi with high-speed service like NBN. You’ll also need a device that supports video calls, such as a smartphone, laptop, or tablet. Once we confirm your booking and your preferred time, you will receive a link via email to join the session.

We’ve chosen a secure teleconferencing system through halaxy to make sure you can easily access our services from anywhere in Australia. While any online system comes with some risks, we’ll talk about them and how we keep things secure during the first session.

  • We know life can get hectic, but your commitment to therapy is really important.

If you need to reschedule, that’s absolutely fine, and you’ll get reminders for your appointments to help keep you on track.

Just a heads-up: if you need to cancel within 48 hours of your appointment, there will be a full session fee charged. This is because we are very limited in session availability and when there is not enough notice given we are unable to offer the session to someone who is waiting for an appointment. This will be discussed further in your first appointment and you can ask any further questions before getting started. We appreciate your understanding!
